Michael Villarreal

Michael Villarreal was recognized as a very talented cellist at a very young age. Michael studied with cellist Dr. Carrie Pierce at the Texas A&M University of Corpus Christi. It was then that he was introduced and continued his studies with Holgen Gjoni at St. Mary’s University of San Antonio. Presently, Michael has been offered the honor of furthering his education under the direction of Holgen Gjoni, who is now at Peabody Institute of the John Hopkins University.

Throughout Michael’s career, he has become known for his dynamic, spirited playing and technical fluidity. He has made soloist appearances and performed for thousands of people in San Antonio’s most prominent performance venues such as the AT&T Center, the Tobin Center, Laurie Auditorium, and the Majestic Theater. He has been featured in an international tour throughout China where he performed in Beijing, Hong Kong, and the world expo in Shanghai. Throughout Michael’s career, he has had the opportunity to learn from members of the following symphonies- Dallas Symphony, Houston Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, and the Cleveland Orchestra.

Michael has also had the honor of learning from international soloists such as Lynn Harrell, Ralph Kirshbaum, Johannes Moser, Jian Wang, and John Sharp. Michael made his soloist debut as a guest soloist with the San Antonio Symphony in 2014 performing Shostakovich Cello Concerto No.1.

Michael continues to perform throughout the san Antonio community. As an advocate for the arts, his performances and community outreach have helped raise millions for local arts organizations. Michael is a highly recognized teacher in San Antonio. He is known for his deep understanding of musical nuances and knowledge of the principals of sound production.
